How does one share a treasure of wonderful letters which tell stories about Dearborn's past? Yesterday friends suggested, "What about a blog?" Okay, let's try.
Let's start with three little girls who were dear friends -- Marie, Dorotha and Ivadel. They were only babies in the year 1900. They describe a mostly happy time, living in the area of today's west Dearborn that is Michigan and Military Avenues. Their letters describing memories of their childhoods sometimes describe the same events, and I thought it would be fun to share them.
Where did the letters come from? Ivadel wrote her own memories in 1964 when she was 67 years old, as a memoir. Marie and Dorotha wrote theirs much later in letter-form, in the early 1980's, at the request of Ivadel's niece Katherine. They have been gathering dust in my house for 20 years. I don't know what Katherine (my mother) planned to do with them.
I plan to share them, in part, on this blog. Look to the next post for the first story.
